Why is the default org agenda start day set to -3days?

I was wondering why some of my agenda items are missing and I discovered that the org package sets org-agenda-start-day to -3d, making the agenda view start three days in the past.

I personally find it highly unintuitive to have this as the default. Is there a specific reason/use-case for that setting?
