Org file checkboxes don't toggle

What happened?

filename: project.org

#+title: Waga

* Something
- [] Item 1

I put the cursor on Item 1, then C-c, C-c or SPC, m, x Nothing happens.

What did you expect to happen?

I expected the checkbox to toggle.

Steps to reproduce

Given above. Tried clean, build, sync and no change.

I think the checkboxes should contain a space like so: [ ].
